“History Doesn't Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”
– Mark Twain
I think that the quote above is largely true. History does not precisely repeat itself. Not exactly.
Yet, it sure rhymes a whole lot, doesn't it?
Yes, Trump and the mindless MAGA Moron cult takeover of politics in the United States understandably conjures up memories of fascism in Europe in the 20th century leading up to World War II. I can understand that. For that matter, I agree with it. This felt particularly true for his second term, with a secret masked police force "disappearing" people and Trump threatening to take over numerous countries militarily.
However, Trump's second term felt inevitable to me in a way that reminded me of what had happened 20 years earlier, with George W. Bush winning an undeserved second term also felt inevitable. Bush's first term was absolutely awful. The biggest national security failure in history, numerous corporate scandals, a manufactured war based on false premises, and so on. He could not have made it clearer that he was unfit for office.
Yet the American people gave him a second term in office. Resoundingly.
I mean, it was a close election. But not that close. No controversy. Bush won.
All of that is what the 2024 election reminded me of. At every turn, Donald Trump was telling the American people exactly how unfit he was for office. Remember, he played the classic divide and conquer tactics between MAGA and the rest of the country, particularly Democrats. He made a point of undermining the legitimacy of elections, refused to concede when he lost, claimed to have "irrefutable proof" of massive voter fraud without ever actually revealing it, bending over backwards not to introduce or even argue "massive voter fraud" in the over 60 court cases that he had, leading his MAGA cult members to the Capitol building with the express intent of interrupting the democratic process so that he might stay in office, suggesting that parts of the Constitution might need to be suspended, not backing away from claims that he would be a dictator.
And we rewarded this guy with a second term?
Unbelievable.
Now, of course, his poll numbers are tanking. They just keep falling.
And I cannot help but think: what does it matter now? You collectively gave him a second term, and thought he was so wonderful that he should have his party in charge of both chambers of Congress, as well as the Supreme Court, to boot.
Wake up.
The months and years after electing someone so completely unworthy of the office is not the time to come to your senses and realize that this is all a big scam.
Elections have consequences.
When will Americans start getting it right?
