Honoring Victor Hugo

Picture of a bust of Victor Hugo

One of the greatest men of letter in French literature was Victor Hugo. He is one of the most prominent authors from the rich tradition of French literature. Most people have at least a passing familiarity with some of his works.

Victor Hugo was born on this day in 1802 in Besançon, France. Thus, it seemed appropriate to honor him today.

He went on to be an iconic author. His most famous works are household names: The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Les Misérables. Both of those stories - as well as many of his others - touched upon universal themes. He was French, and so of course he wrote about France. Yet the unfairness of the law, of oppression, the deceit which people reveal towards one another, the ugly underbelly of society which his written works reveal, have proven powerful well beyond his time. The fact that those works remain well-known almost two hundred years on is proof of that.

Hugo died on May 22, 1885, at the age of 83. Yet in many respects, his works, and his memory, live on.
