This probably makes me sound like a broken record, but I cannot help but recall two friends - both older white males - who seriously suggested that the United States could no longer be considered a racist country after Barack Obama was elected President.
It seemed premature at the time, and hopefully, they both woke up to a much darker, grimmer, less convenient reality: that racism is alive and well in he United States. Indeed, much of it never went anywhere, and was never seriously challenged.
How else can you explain the first black president being replaced by a man who received the endorsement of white supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, and who regularly has received praise from high profile white supremacists like David Duke.
Well, in truth, that is only that it has become so obvious and undeniable these days, with headlines that scream out at you, revealing this uglier truth about our nation. In fact, if people were paying attention, these signs have been apparent consistently for many decades, since surely the official end of legalized Jim Crow segregation in the South in the mid-60's.
In fact, listening to the way that some of these people criticized President Obama, and how they seemed fixated not on the policy differences, as much as the race issue, became blatantly obvious during his years in office. If anything, it has grown to such a scale that it has become glaringly obvious and undeniable (unless you're Trump or a staunch supporter who never dares criticize him in any manner) to anyone with an ounce of objectivity.
One horrendous example was that of a Republican official who once referred to he former First Lady, Michelle Obama, as an "Ape in Heels."
Sure, no racism there, right?
Keep telling yourselves that, Trump fans. Yeah, right.
Well, anyway, it seems that that woman herself is no ideal, upstanding American citizen, as she is heading behind bars.
It sure seems deserved.
