Super Bowl LIII Champions
New England Patriots
The members of the most recent New England Patriots team to win the Super Bowl recently received their rings.
Not surprisingly, it is the biggest one ever to date. Of course it is. Every year, the newest champions seem to try and set the record for the largest ring ever. Sooner or later, it will cover the entire hand, presumably. At least, that is the direction that we are heading in.
Members of the Patriots earned the ring by getting back to the Super Bowl yet again earlier this year, and then holding off the explosive Los Angeles Rams, 13-3, to win their third Super Bowl in a five year span, and their sixth overall. All of those Super Bowl championships have come under the Belichick/Brady era, and with Kraft as owner. It is, undeniably, one of the greatest eras of any sports franchise in modern history.
Yes, many people are sick of them. And, more generally, many people seem to be sick of Boston-area teams, and apparently fans, as well.
Still, the staggering levels of success for this Patriots franchise has been largely unprecedented, and has come unexpectedly, as well, as it happened in an era which was supposed to favor greater parity, and thus more equal teams. These Patriots of the Belichick era have completely torn that notion to shreds, and made a mockery of it with a level of excellence rarely seen. They have appeared in 9 of the last 18 Super Bowls, winning six overall. No other team in modern NFL history had had quite comparable success, either in terms of championships won, or other levels of success which the Patriots have achieved during this stretch.
The only comparable level of consistent, mostly uninterrupted success that I can think of in sports right now would be the dominance of the 'Big Three" in men's tennis, who have virtually owned the number one ranking since Roger Federer first obtained it in early 2004, and have won all but a handful of the Grand Slams that have taken place since that time. It never seems to be too long before the Patriots are right back in the Super Bowl and, again, they usually seem to find a way to win, despite considerable turnover and personnel changes. They have weathered all sorts of storms, including aging and other teams preparations and rises and falls. The New England Patriots of this Belichick era have indeed withstood the test of time.
Love them or hate them, the Pats have earned it!
