I cannot remember ever having seen a large brown snake in the wilderness of New Jersey before today's hike.
Yet, that was what my son and I encountered earlier today while hiking.
In fact, I almost stepped on it. Not paying close enough attention to where I was walking, it suddenly seemed like the stick next to my foot moved. I instinctively moved away, and saw a large (large for this part of the country, anyway) brown snake raising it's head as if to strike.
