Not long ago, Rob Halford of the metal band Judas Priest kicked a fan's cell phone out of his hands, and it went flying. Hopefully, it did not hit or hurt another fan attending the show.
This was a controversial incident, because while we all know that cell phones are annoying sometimes, especially at shows, that does not give anyone the right to kick someone's hand or phone, or to potentially put other people in danger from a flying object like that.
Yet, this was not the first time in recent years that I had heard some negative news regarding Judas Priest. A few years ago, I was attending a local appearance by author Stephen King (he has long been one of my favorite authors), and he somehow got to mentioning Judas Priest. It was for the lyrics to a Judas Priest song that he wanted to use in one of his books, and they were going to allow that only after he paid a rather exorbitant fee. I believe it was at least $10,000, or maybe more.
King refused, and he used the lyrics from some other band instead. But he tells that story, I think, to cast Judas Priest in a negative light. And rightly so, I might add, as that seems a bit too greedy and narcissistic for my tastes.
So, given that they seem a bit full of themselves, I thought the following comments, which were Rob Halford's official response to this latest incident, kind of spoke volumes:
Update: Judas Priest have commented on Rob Halford’s cell-phone kick. “The facts are we love our fans and you can film us all you like and watch our show on your phone rather than in the flesh,” the wrote on Twitter. “However, if you physically interfere with the Metal God’s performance you now know what will happen……..”
This is the article that I used in writing this particular blog entry, and from which I obtained the quotes used above:
