Gorbachev Explains That He Stepped Down Rather Than Risk Civil War

I have been posting some videos recently involving former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev was, of course, the last of the Soviet leaders, before the Soviet Union dissolved. A number of countries formed after the breakup of the Soviet Union, with the biggest and most powerful country being Russia, followed by Ukraine.

The country was set for a civil war. All of the elements were in place, he explains. And he did not want to risk a civil war, just because of a personal, selfish desire to stay in power. So if it came down to a civil war based on what he did, he decided the best thing would be for him to step down. And that is exactly what he did.

Gorbachev was one of those rare leaders – very rare indeed – who seemed to have the wisdom and sense of responsibility to put the interests of his country and his people over his own personal ambition.

Meanwhile, we here in the United States just got past one man who was notoriously selfish and narcissistic. That man has propped up the lie that he won an election which, in fact, he lost by over 7 million votes, and which he lost convincingly in terms of the Electoral College, as well. He was one of the least popular and least trusted presidents in history, and yet, he kept talking about himself and how adored he was the world over. So selfish and narcissistic was he, that he had a massive crowd try to storm the Capitol building in Washington in order to try and derail the election that he had lost, and which would soon see him out of power. He actively tried to start something much bigger, which could easily have sparked a civil war - something that many of his followers seem to actively want and seek - so that he personally could avoid the embarrassment of having to acknowledge that he lost an election, decisively.

Wish we still had wise and responsible leaders like Gorbachev at the helm of very powerful countries. Sign of the times, as well as of our priorities and values here in this country presently.
