Russia today announced the mass surrender of over 1,000 Ukrainians fighting in Mariupol. This would seem to suggest that their strategy of all-out assault on the city would have seen some success, even if it obviously took longer than Russians expected it to.
However, Ukrainian government sources have denied this. They are saying that the fighting still continues, and that this report of some mass surrender amounts to Russian propaganda. For their part, American military sources claim that they also do not believe that the Russian military has fully taken over the city, and that the fight continues.
But Russian television did show images of Ukrainian forces surrendering.
Ukrainian government sources, including President Zelensky, believe that tens of thousands have died in Mariupol, and that the city has been leveled by Russia's military.
Regardless of what has or has not happened in Mariupol, the United States pledged a greater level of support of $800 million in support of the Ukrainian war cause.
Meanwhile, Karim Khan the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor Karim Khan has described Ukraine as "a crime scene." There is evidence, according to him, of both "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity."
To date, it has been estimated that around 10 million Ukrainians have fled their homes, with well over 6 million believed to be displaced within Ukraine itself. Over 4.3 million Ukrainians have outright fled Ukraine since the start of the war in late February.
