Newest Supergroup Formed From Former Seattle Music Scene Heavyweights

Anyone who was around in the early nineties likely remembers the awesome music scene that was then blossoming. It was really something special, and I am glad to have been around. That scene was so awesome, so diverse, so exciting, that it still sometimes seems amazing to me that so much incredible and creative music came out more or less all at the same time. Almost immediately, I found myself getting hooked, and exploring many new artists and different sounds. It seemed to happen all at once, and in numerous genres.

Obviously, Seattle had many of the bands that were then emerging and even dominating the music scene. There were a bunch of bands that exploded onto the scene from there at around that time. That included the Screaming Trees and Mudhoney, and then the “Big Four,” which consisted of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana.

Unfortunately, it also did not seem to last particularly long. For a few years, it felt promising. But little by little, many of the most prominent bands from that era seemed to fade from the scene, one way or another. Everyone remembers that Kurt Cobain committed suicide, and Nirvana was no more. Shannon Hoon died, and Blind Melon was no more. Alice in Chains seemed to fade away, breaking up in 1996. Soundgarden released  great album in 1996 and did Lollapalooza, where I saw them for the first time. But one year later, they had broken up, which meant that three of the big four Seattle bands were done. And Pearl Jam had deliberately tried to unplug the machinery of their popularity.

So in other words, by 1997, the music scene felt entirely different. Some bands from the early nineties were still around and making music, and would continue to make music for some time to come. That included Pearl Jam (who I already mentioned), Metallica, the Smashing Pumpkins, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hole, and a few others. Also, Dave Grohl had formed the Foo Fighters, another exciting and up and coming band that would last for years. So it was not like the music scene was gone entirely.

But the explosion of creativity and exciting new bands was done, long gone. It felt like the music scene had largely dried out.

There were some bright spots every now and then. Some cool new bands came out, some good, solid music. But these seemed to be fewer and farther between. It was not an entire music scene dominating the airwaves, as well as MTV, like in the early nineties, and back when MTV actually was focused on music still.

So when there is news of something potentially exciting, it is difficult not to be a bit excited and take notice.

The latest news is the formation of one of those so-called “supergroups.” This one has members of three of the “Big Four” Seattle groups from the early nineties. Nirvana is represented by bassist Krist Novoslic. Soundgarden is represented twice over with guitarist Kim Thayil and drummer Matt Cameron, who also is currently the drummer for Pearl Jam, as well. It is the first time that Thayil and Cameron have worked on the same album since they played together in Soundgarden.

Of course, there are other members, as well. Other than those already mentioned? well, according to an article by Spencer Kaufman of Consequence.net:

"The outfit is rounded out by guitarist Bubba Dupree (of the ’80s hardcore band Void) and singers Jillian Raye (of Novoselic’s group Giants in the Trees) and Jennifer Johnson. According to the credits listed on the band’s official website, Novoselic and Cameron are among the primary songwriters of the 11-track album. Jack Endino, who famously worked on Nirvana’s Bleach, co-produced and mixed the LP. "

They released their new album, and we can finally get our first listen to the new material, to the new album.

No word just yet one if the band intends to go on tour, and when this might happen. But I will try and keep up and post anything that I do find here in as timely a manner as possible.

Meanwhile, here is a link for more information on the band and it’s new album, as well as a chance to listen to it a bit.

Enjoy!
