It should really come as no surprise just how much a very stressful situation - such as a war - will physically take on a person. That may be especially true of a good leader, who feels the pain and loss of his people. Such was the case with Abraham Lincoln, and we can see just how much he aged from the beginning of his term in office, to the end. The American Civil War raged in between that time, and it clearly weighed on Lincoln.
The same seems to be true now for Volodymyr Zelensky. He was president of Ukraine when tensions with Russia escalated significantly, until the outbreak of war. Sometimes, it is difficult to believe that this war has been going on for not even quite two months. It feels much longer than that, and most anyone reading this is, like me, on the outside of the Ukrainian conflict, looking in.
Zelensky was a television star before he ascended to the highest office in his land. Surely, part of the reason that he got the part was that he was considered a good-looking man.
Well, he seems to have become something of a sex symbol, almost, since the war broke out, and the world stood up and took notice. Zelensky seems to epitomize the role of a strong and even wise leader. But he also seems to have a strong appeal for women, who like his image as a truly strong and courageous leader. A man who is masculine, without necessarily being "toxic" when exerting this masculinity.
All of that may be true. But the war has apparently already been taking a physical toll on Zelensky already, even though it still has only been weeks yet.
Below is a link to an interesting article by Jaclyn Diaz of NPR, who elaborates on how the physical and especially mental toll of the war in Ukraine may already be physically visible on Ukraine's leader. Take a look at the link below:
