The more that we learn about Trump and the people around him, campaigning so hard to get him to win the presidency, and the more undeniable and obvious it becomes that, in fact, this is more than just a regular election about issues. That this is a choice about whether or not we actually value our democracy, or whether we are finally, collectively willing as a nation to forego and pretense of actually valuing democratic principles, and simply will hand over the reins of power to men, mostly, who clearly intend to abuse that power and create at least a de facto dictatorship.
One of the main men close to Trump - and constantly pining for his access to greater power no matter what needs to be done, legal or illegal - is Roger Stone.
You think that the warnings about the threat that Trump and his group pose to democracy are overblown?
Roger Stone named two Democrats to be put on a possible death list before the 2020 election. At least one of them "had to die before the election," Stone is reported to have said. Here is a direct quote of what he allegedly said, as published in a recent Guardian article by Martin Pengelly:
“Let’s go find Swalwell. It’s time to do it. Then we’ll see how brave the rest of them are. It’s time to do it. It’s either Nadler or Swalwell has to die before the election. They need to get the message. Let’s go find Swalwell and get this over with. I’m just not putting up with this shit any more.”
Wow.
Does that sound like someone who is a believer in serious and responsible democracy to you?
The two Democrats who were named as deserving to die before the 2020 election are Congressmen Jerry Nadler and Eric Stalwell.
Again, our clearly fragile American democracy just cannot afford another Trump presidency. Remember, Trump never conceded the 2020 election to this day. He hoped to stay in power by what I feel was nothing short of a coup d'état. All of that after Trump swore an oath to protect the Constitution, which he since has clearly demonstrated to actually hold in disdain. He even outright suggested that parts of the Constitution should be "suspended" (his word) to assure that he wins elections.
Let us hope that when the time comes, Americans understand just how bad it would be to hand over the reins of the highest government power back to someone who showed, without a shadow of a doubt, that he is not mature or responsible enough to actually be trusted with such power.
Truly, democracy might not live to see the end of another Trump term in office.
