Phil Simms, the former starting quarterback for the first Super Bowl win in the history of the New York Giants, believes that the G-Men will be "serious contenders" next season. He was also the starting quarterback for the team in 1990, the year that they would win their second Super Bowl title, although he was injured late in the season and kept out of the playoffs as a result. Still, I think that he deserves credit for that one, too, since he was the highest rated passer in the entire league that year - and that was when some truly elite and all-time great quarterbacks were still active. Simms was the highest rated passer in a year when Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway, Steve Young, Warren Moon, Troy Aikman, Jim Kelly, and some others were still playing. To me, that's saying something.
Indeed, Simms feels that the Giants might return to being a relative elite next season. Not everyone agrees, of course. In fact, some people apparently feel that this is laughable. But let's remember that Big Blue went to the playoffs, and advanced to the divisional round, just one year ago. Sure, this past season was mostly a disaster.
To my mind's eye, I don't feel that the Giants were nearly as bad as their record - and particularly their start to this season - might suggest. True, they had some embarrassing performances, particularly the two times when they faced the Dallas Cowboys.
However, they still do have the basis of the same team that they were just last year. Remember, a lot of people had high expectations for them this season, but they had a lot of tough challenges and bad luck. If they can get off to a better start next season, who knows what might happen?
Phil Simms Predicts Giants Will be "Serious Contenders" Next Season The New York Giants are in the midst of a rebuild. That didn't stop Giants legend Phil Simms from predicting the Giants to have a bounce back season next season. EZEKIEL TREZEVANT IVJAN 29, 2024 10:
