It was on this day in 1964 - 60 years ago exactly- that the Beatles had their now legendary performance on the Ed Sullivan show.
Obviously, they had a profound impact on popular culture. The Beatles became instant heartthrobs. They suddenly were the biggest band on the planet, and opened the door for other rock bands from England to make it big, prompting the "Second British Invasion."
In time, the band changed their style of play, significantly. They experimented, and their influence continued to simply be enormous. So great was their influence, in fact, that it continued long after the band split up in the spring of 1970. They continue to be remembered, and remain highly influential, even after sixty years since their first truly big breakthrough, which came with their visit to America early in 1964. And of all of the events that helped to make their visit to America memorable, their unforgettable performance on the Ed Sullivan Show before throngs of screaming, adoring fans (mostly teenaged girls) helped to immortalize that moment. And it happened on this day exactly 60 years ago.
What a legendary band.
