Saturday Night Live Draws the Legendary Ire of a Mean Trump Tweet

Saturday Night Live (SNL) has been known to take some big shots at Donald Trump, particularly since it became clear that he was going to be the Republican nominee for the White House in 2016. Obviously, it has only intensified since Trump was elected in November of that year. That is only normal, as SNL has pretty much done the same towards everyone who becomes a serious presidential candidate for as long as the show has existed. This is especially true when someone is elected to the Oval Office.

Yet, perhaps it is especially true regarding Donald Trump. Why? Because he is such a comical figure. A clown. And he never seems willing to pass up an opportunity to prove it, again and again and again. If it were not for the fact that he is not actually kidding around, and that the stakes are so damn high given the position that he now occupies, it might actually all be pretty funny.

Instead, of course, he holds the highest, most powerful office in the land. Some people are laughing, and really, we all need a bit of humor to lighten the situation a bit. The comical portrayals of Trump - who himself feels like a comical caricature come to real life - help to bring some humor. Probably the most famous portrayals of Trump have been by SNL, particularly by Alec Baldwin, who really plays a perfect Donald Trump.

When you watch them during these skits, you clearly get the sense that they are portraying Trump as a clueless and classless idiot. Which is to say, they are not very far off the mark from the reality. After all, this is a man who is most famous for lying, for manipulating people, and for his unbelievable, oversized ego. Have we ever seen such a megalomaniac in the history of the world? This guy literally puts his own name up high on top of skyscrapers in bright letters to dominate our modern cities. He always gives himself credit for anything that goes well, regardless of whether or not he actually deserves credit or not, and he always points the finger of blame elsewhere but himself when things do not go so great.

Again, it might be funny, if it were not real. And if the whole world was not watching, and judging us Americans, as a result. After all, it was we Americans who collectively put this guy in there, and don't bother me with talk about how he did not win the popular vote. According to the rules (which are unfair and undemocratic, but accepted by Americans nevertheless), Trump was the uncontested winner. He was immediately given the status of President-elect, and had months to prepare for taking over, and no one questioned it. He had the worst inaugural speech in history, and there was no honeymoon period with his coming to power, like there has always been with new presidents before.

I hardly need to mention that his actual presidency has only made matters worse. This is a man who could not single out white supremacists and outright Nazis as responsible for violence during a weekend of protests, when these people came armed and ready for a fight. His inability to clearly condemn Nazis earned him worldwide condemnation. He referred to dozens of nations in Africa and Central America as "shithole nations," a comment that received worldwide condemnation. He constantly denies science, and received worldwide condemnation for pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord. Under him, the United States recently just received more criticism of actually championing coal at the recent climate conference in Katowice. Trump received worldwide condemnation for pulling the United States out of other international treaties, most famously the Iran Nuclear deal. And let's not even get into the tweets, right?

Well, actually, perhaps this time, we should get into his tweets. Or at least one of them, in particular, regarding Saturday Night Live.

Here is what President Trump tweeted on Sunday, the day after the most recent SNL was aired, particularly taking aim at him in a Christmas spoof skit imagining a world where Trump was never elected to the White House. Fittingly, it was called "It's a Wonderful Life," and was a comical take on the famous movie of the same name. Here is what Trump tweeted about it:

"A REAL scandal is the one sided coverage, hour by hour, of networks like NBC and Democrat spin machines like Saturday Night Live. It is all nothing less than unfair news coverage and Dem commercials. Should be tested in courts, can’t be legal? Only defame and belittle! Collusion?"

I guess it is safe to suggest that he did not like the episode much, huh?

Melting snowflake, anyone?

Let me remind you, this is the President of the United States. He has his finger on the button. Presumably, he has more important responsibilities to worry about then how a weekly comedy show portrays him, regardless of whether their portrayal is fair or not. From Trump's own past words, you certainly would get the impression that he understood just how many responsibilities come with the presidency, because he promised his faithful that he would not have time for playing golf once he was elected into the White House. But man, he has played a ton of golf since! And he does not read the summaries of world affairs, because they do not interest him.

You might think that this implies that he is so busy, that he does not have time, right? But then, there is all that time that the idiot spends - or rather, wastes, and at taxpayer expense, to boot - playing endless rounds of golf. And he also seems to have plenty of time for his daily avalanche of tweets, most of which are patently absurd and idiotic, including, obviously, this one, about SNL. A reminder here that SNL is a comedy show, and that it does not seriously proclaim itself to be "news." But Trump somehow finds the time to attack them, as well as many others, personally, in those ridiculous tweets where he routinely betrays his immaturity and pettiness, as well as his vindictiveness and intolerance. I mean, seriously! Collusion? Defaming and belittling the "unfair news coverage" and suggesting that criticism of him cannot possibly be legal?

Does this guy have anything better to do with his time? After all, he was elected to represent the nation, right? He promised to remain too busy to play golf - a lie - and he swore to uphold the constitution. He is claiming that their less than flattering portrayal of him cannot be legal? Seriously? How pathetic can you get? No other president ever went after their portrayal by SNL on this level before, although many surely could not be too pleased with how they were often portrayed. Yet, Trump apparently has plenty of time to attack SNL with another ridiculous, petty tweet, because there cannot possibly be any business concerning the nation more pressing than that, right?

This guy is a such a cruel joke! And need I remind anyone, the whole world is watching! Remember how Trump was literally laughed at before the United Nations? Well, just in case you thought that was some sort of fluke, or if you actually were foolish enough to believe FOX News interpretation of the incident, that the leaders were laughing with him (something that was clearly contrasted by Trump's own surprised reaction to being laughed at), a German television show just awarded Trump the "Golden Idiot" award.

And he promised to make the world respect us again, and that they would stop laughing at us.

Look who's laughing now!

But you know what? We should laugh. Even if it hurts a bit, because it is making a mockery of the United States, we should laugh. After all, no one - and not nation - is perfect. We all make mistakes. And let's just say it: Trump was a big mistake. You might say he was a Hee-yuuuge mistake! His presidency is a blemish, and the ramifications of it will live on for many decades, long after he is out of office, and even long after he is gone altogether, for that matter. He is the kind of idiot that can define the mindset of a nation when elected, and that is not a compliment. But he wants to be taken seriously, above all else. He wants people to respect him. And laughing at him, making a mockery of his ridiculously oversized ego, is one of the best ways to undermine his authority. Apparently, it is one of the quickest and surest ways to get his attention, and make sure he hears what people really think of him, for that matter. So let's keep it going. In that spirit, for a good laugh just in time for the holiday season, I added the clip that got Trump so worked up in the first place this weekend! Please do a small, diligent, patriotic duty and watch this clip, and let yourself laugh a little. At this point, I hardly think we would be worse off as a nation if we cannot laugh at ourselves, and take ourselves, and out nation, a little less seriously all of the time. If we are ever to recover from this Trump era, we are going to need it!
