Lake Placid & the Miracle on Ice: A Visit

Almost everyone in the country has at least heard of the Miracle on Ice.

The area surrounding this town is strikingly beautiful,  with dramatic mountain peaks  - some of the tallest mountains east of the Rockies  - can be clearly seen. The town itself  has the lake next to it, and it also has numerous reminders of the time when this modest little upstate New York town was the center of the sports world.  Twice,  actually!

Lake Placid is probably most famous for the "Miracle on Ice." At least, that is the one event that most people conjure up when they think of Lake Placid these days. You think of the 1980 Winter Olympics, and you especially think of what was arguably the biggest highlight of those Olympics, which was the United States National Hockey Team upsetting the seemingly unbeatable hockey squad from the Soviet Union, which is often still widely regarded as the greatest hockey team in history.

The arena, which is right in the middle of town, is open to anyone, seemingly. There are actually three ice rinks in the enormous complex, and they make clear where the main one is, the one where the "Miracle on Ice" actually took place. It was fascinating to see, and kind of a thrill, truth be told. It is also a nice looking arena. Probably modest by the standards of over-sized and over-commercialized arenas of this modern day, but nevertheless it looks modern and spacious and like a nice arena.

However, there is more to Lake Placid than the arena, or even the "Miracle on Ice." There is some incredible natural beauty to this place, and the lake gives out an incredible view of some of the truly tall surrounding mountains. Many of them were snow-capped already, despite there being a week and a half before we even reach Halloween. My guess is that this is actually not an uncommon occurrence for the Adirondacks.
