Some interesting games this past week, and the trends are interesting. There remain two unbeatens
There are a few other teams that remain among the elites, as well. Buffalo, Green Bay, and New Orleans all have suffered only one loss to date, and are right behind the remaining unbeaten teams.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Miami and Cincinnati remain winless, and bordering on hopeless.
Arizona 27, N.Y. Giants 21 - Going into this game, I figured that the season was on the line for the G-Men. Either they win it, and reach a second place tie with the loser of the Cowboys-Eagles game, or they lose it, and their season is pretty much over. And they lost, of course.
Green Bay 42, Oakland 24 - Not surprisingly, the Packers made the most of their fabled home field advantage, and beat down the Raiders, who simply had no way to stop the Pack. Green Bay raises their record to 6-1, while the Raiders fall to 3-3.
Jacksonville 27, Cincinnati 17 - The Bengals now fall to 0-7, and are flirting with matching the worst start in he history of the franchise, when they started the 1993 season 0-10. The Jaguars, meanwhile, snap a two-game losing streak, and improve to 3-4.
Buffalo 31, Miami 21 - Honestly, I had assumed that the Bills were going to win this one more convincingly. They won it, which is not a surprise. But I had believed that they were going to put Miami out of their misery much earlier, and more convincingly. Still, the win improves Buffalo to a 5-1 mark, while the Dolphins fall to 0-6.
Indianapolis 30, Houston 23 - The Colts won the big AFC South showdown against the Texans, and now own an impressive 4-2 record, and sole possession of first place in the division as a result.
Minnesota 42, Detroit 30 - This is where I feel bad, and a bit mad, about the Lions having been screwed on the Monday Night Football game in Green Bay. They should have won that one, and it might have been a real confidence booster. Instead, the call goes against them, and a hard-earned road win instead becomes a disastrous divisional loss. The Vikings quickly pounced and made matters worse for the Lions, beating them in Detroit, and making a season that once looked very promising for the Lions now look like it is spiraling out of control. Minnesota improves to -1 with this win, while the Lions fall to 2-3-1, with their second straight loss, and in sole possession of last place in the NFC North, once again.
San Francisco 9, Washington 0 - The Niners have reached an unbeaten record of 6-0 for the third time in their franchise history (the other times being 1984, when they started the season 7-0, and in 1990, when they started off 10-0) by showing strengths on both sides of the ball. When one unit is not playing particularly well, like the offense struggling yesterday, than the other unit steps up. In this case, the defense pitched a shutout, allowing the rather pedestrian 9 points to not only stand, but make this a convincing win.
L.A. Rams 37, Atlanta 10 - The Rams finally got the cure for what ails them: a game against the Falcons. Atlanta appears to be more talented than their 1-6 record suggests, but clearly, something is wrong. Records do not lie. The Rams get back to a winning record at 4-3, and finally snap their three-game losing streak. The Falcons, meanwhile, fall to 1-6 on the season, one of the worst records in the league.
Tennessee 23, L.A. Chargers 20 - The season keeps spiraling out of control for the Chargers, and this already is beginning to feel like a lost season for them. They fall to 2-5 on the season, while the Titans raise their record to 3-4.
New Orleans 36, Chicago 25 – With the win, the Saints remain hot without Brees, as they raise their record to 6-1. The Bears, meanwhile, suffer their second straight loss, and fall to a disappointing 3-3 mark on the year.
Baltimore 30, Seattle 16 - Okay, now this one surprised me. The Ravens whipped the Seahawks in Seattle, which is not easy to do, and yet, the game was not as close as the score would indicate. With the win, Baltimore improves to 5-2, while the Seahawks fall to that same record.
