So, the big Thursday Night NFC West showdown is now over. It was a tight affair almost from beginning to end, as well as a back and forth one, with both teams owning the momentum at different points in the game. Both teams played well, but one team had to win, and the other had to lose.

Both teams also lost on fourth quarter challenges that proved costly. Seattle coach Pete Carroll challenged and lost a timeout as a result, likely unnecessarily. But Rams coach Sean McVay returned the favor, as he challenged what seemed to him to be a touchdown catch, but which proved inconclusive. Thus he lost the challenge.

Ultimately, the Rams managed to overcome a 14-6 deficit late in the first half with a key touchdown with second remaining in the half to close to within a point of the Seahawks. They were then able to muster another solid touchdown drive to start the second half, and take the lead.

Yet, the Seahawks responded with a quick touchdown drive of their own to retake the lead, as David Moore caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to cap a six-play, 47-yard drive that came in just under three minutes total.

Seattle’s final drive was solid and long, eating up almost half of the final quarter, but they were unable to get a touchdown on there first three downs, but down 29-24 with under three minutes left, they decided to take a gamble and go for it on fourth down. It paid off in a big way, as a scrambling Wilson ultimately found Chris Carson in the corner of the end zone. Carson bobbled it, but ultimately made the catch for the touchdown that put the Seahawks back on top by just a single point at 30-29.

That left the Rams an opportunity in their final drive, with just over two minutes to play. They had been able to move the ball almost at will against the Seahawks defense, and all they needed was a field goal for the win. But a key interception by Tedric Thompson, which revealed considerable athletic skills and concentration, ended the drive and gave the ball back to Seattle.

However, the Rams were able to hold Seattle and get the ball back with just under 1:40 to play. Still, the Rams had another opportunity to try and secure the win. They did get within field goal range, but Rams placekicker Greg Zuerlein missed it, sending it just wide right, thus icing the game in Seattle’s favor.

Russell Wilson had a tremendous game, completing 17 of 23 passes for 268 yards, with an impressive four touchdown passes. He was also solid with his legs, keeping the Los Angeles defense honest, scrambling for 33 yards on 7 carries.

For the Rams, Jared Goff completed 29 of 49 passes for 395 yards and one touchdown, as well as one interception. Todd Gurley added 51 yards on and two touchdowns on 15 carries. He was a significant part of both of those third quarter touchdown drives by the Rams, as Seattle’s defense had difficulty trying to contain him in that quarter.

With the win, Seattle improves to 4-1, and finally got over the Los Angeles hex, beating the Rams for the first time since October of 2017, when the Rams were really only beginning to get good. The Rams, meanwhile, drop their second straight game,

My pick: Inaccurate
