New York Giants 14
at
New England Patriots 35
The first half was dominated by both teams playing solid defense, although there were costly mistakes made by both teams. Many of the scores in the first half were the result of mistakes.
The first score of the game came in very unexpected and highly unorthodox fashion, as Giants punter Riley Dixon kicked his punt right to the back of the helmet of one his blockers, Nate Stupar. The ball fell flat as a result. New England's rookie defensive end Chase Winovich scooped it up and took the short trip into the end zone to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Not too much later, Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones released the ball just before he was going to take a sack, but his arm was hit just as he released the ball. It was intercepted by Duron Harmon. A couple of minutes later, they made it count with a one-yard touchdown run by New England running back Brandon Bolden. Suddenly, it was 14-0, Pats.
But to his credit Jones did not get too shaken up with this INT. Jones found Golden Tate deep. The defender had solid coverage and managed to get a hand on the ball, forcing Tate to bobble it. But he managed to reel it in, and then ran for a 64-yard touchdown, to cut the New England lead to 14-7. It was the first touchdown pass allowed by this impressive New England defense this season.
Shortly after that, Lorenzo Carter managed to force a fumble on a sack of Brady, and the ball was recovered by Giants linebacker Markus Golden, who then ran it in, managing to leap into the end zone after being taken down. he stayed on top of the Patriots tacklers, and so it was good for the tying touchdown, as a stunned Foxboro Stadium suddenly grew silent.
Just before halftime, the Pats managed to regain their composure enough to retake the lead with a touchdown drive that was capped by a quarterback sneak by Brady for the TD. New England took a 21-14 lead into the lockers by halftime.
It was at this point that the announcers for the game - Joe Buck and Troy Aikman - pointed out some truly amazing statistics. New England has an astonishing 97-1 record at Gillette Stadium when leading at halftime. Make that 98-1 now. Here are some other incredible stats: with this win, the Pats have now won 16 straight regular season games at Gillette, and you can add at least a couple of home playoff wins to that record, as well. And New England is 12-0 under Belichick against rookie quarterbacks. No team starting a rookie quarterback has ever managed to beat them, including these Giants last night. Finally, New England has an astonishing 118-21 home record since moving to Gillette Stadium back in 2002. No surprise that is an NFL best.
Trying to work their way to a tying touchdown, the Giants orchestrated a solid drive to open up the second half, only to see the drive end prematurely with another Jones interception, The third quarter remained scoreless.
However, another Giants turnover - this one on a fumble - led to another unorthodox touchdown. Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy picked up a fumble caused by a big hit by linebacker James Collins on Giants running back Jon Hillman. Van Noy ran it near the end zone, and at first, it seemed like Daniel Jones had managed to take him down just before he reached the end zone. But the replay showed that he was not down before he managed to dive in, just getting the ball into the pylon for the touchdown. Now, the Pats once again had a two touchdown lead.
When the ensuing New York drive stalled, the Giants opted to punt the ball, rather than go for it on fourth down. The Patriots made them pay, as Tom Brady found Julius Edelman for a long pass that brought the Pats to the 2-yard line. Two quarterback sneaks later, the Patriots scored another touchdown, to put the game entirely out of reach for New York.
Ultimately, both defenses played well. But the Giants defense kind of ran out of gas towards the end, allowing just a few more points than New England's defense, which was solid throughout, and only allowed that one touchdown play.
Brady completed 31 of 41 for 334 yards, with one interception. However, he also made some key passes, and had those two quarterback sneak touchdowns. Brady is 131-20 all-time at Foxboro through the course of his career. Edelman had 113 yards on nine receptions this evening. Sony Michel added 86 yards on 22 carries. Brady passed Peyton Manning for second most regular season yards passing last night, while Edelman moved into third most career receptions in franchise history.
As for the G-Men, Jones 15 of 31 for 161 yards, with the one TD pass, but also throwing three INT's. Jonathan Hillman added just 38 yards on 11 carries for the injury riddled Giants offense.
With the win, New England remains unbeaten at 6-0. They are one of only two remaining unbeaten teams, with the other being the San Francisco 49ers. The Pats are also the only remaining unbeaten team in the AFC. This is the sixth time in franchise history that New England has started off a season at 6-0. The three other times have also all happened during the tenure of Belichik as head coach, and Brady at quarterback (and Kraft as owner). They started off 6-0 in 2004, and went on to win the Super Bowl that season. They famously went 18-0 in the 2007-08 season, although they lost to the Giants in that Super Bowl. And they started off 10-0 in 2015, before losing their first game at the eventual Super Bowl champions Denver Broncos, who would narrowly beat the Pats in the AFC Championship later in the season.
The Patriots have scored 190 points in their six games to date this season, more than any other team. That is an average of over 33 points per game, which is currently the best in the league. The Ravens are the second highest scoring team in the league to this point, with 161 points scored in their five games so far. On the other side, the Patriots have allowed a total of 48 points so far this season, and no one has scored more than 14 points against them to date this season. The team with the second least amount of points allowed to date are the 49ers, who have allowed 57 points in their first four games. The Bills, an AFC East rival to New England, have allowed the third least amount of points with 70 in their first five games of the season.
As for the Giants, they suffer their second loss in a row,and fall to 2-4. They remain in third place, ahead of Washington, but will likely lose ground to either Dallas or Philly, or possibly both.
