Cleveland Browns
at
San Francisco 49ers
So, what happened to Cleveland?
This was supposed to be a team ready to make a leap, with some even projecting them to join the ranks of the elite this season.
But five games into this season, they are 2-3, and were just blown out by San Francisco. Now, granted, the 49ers themselves appear to be an elite team, but Cleveland managed to score one field goal total. Baker Mayfield completed only 8 of 22 passes for 100 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked four times. Nick Chubb added 87 yards on 16 carries on the ground, but the Browns offense looked just inept and awful last night. They produced only 180 yards and nine first downs, and they turned the ball over four times. You can’t win games like that.
The 49ers, by contrast, looked almost reminiscent of the glory days of old. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 20 of 29 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Breida added 114 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries, and Tevin Coleman was also a force on the ground, with 97 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Overall, the 49ers produced 446 yards and 22 first downs on offense, while possessing the ball for over 37 minutes, dominating in every facet of the game.
With this win, the 49ers improve to 4-0, and remain one of two undefeated teams in the league. This is the best start for San Francisco since the 1990 season, when they started off 10-0. That team had Joe Montana, with Steve Young as the backup, and the leading receiver was Jerry Rice. Some of the big names on defense included Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley. Now, that was a great San Francisco team. Not sure that this edition of the 49ers looks quite that good, although they sure have been impressive to this point in the season.
Meanwhile, the Browns drop to 2-3, and even though they remain in second place in the AFC North, and only trail the Ravens by one game, this nevertheless had to be a very sobering loss. They were completely dominated during a nationally televised game, and just looked awful. They were beaten in almost every way possible in this game. This looked more like the Browns team that went 0-16 two seasons ago, rather than the hyped Cleveland team that many expected to be a force this year.
My prediction: Accurate
