Seriously, it is news stories like this that make the current reality feel a whole lot stranger than fiction.
Really, if you had asked me ten or twenty years ago, or perhaps even five years ago, if a Congressman would make such a comparison, especially when the "victim" is an alleged billionaire elected into the White House who has always lived a life of ease and great privilege, yet who never fails to whine about how unfairly life has treated him, it would have seemed to preposterous to take seriously.
Yet, here were are.
The congressman is Barry Loudermilk, a Republican from Georgia.
Admittedly, I had never heard of him before these ridiculous remarks, either. Guess he wants to make headlines, and become a household name. Perhaps he is hoping to rise to make a White House run himself, eh?
Would it be surprising in the least?
Anyway, this is what he said, this is the comparison that he made yesterday, and which he apparently was very proud of himself for after the fact:
"Before you take this historic vote today, one week before Christmas, I want you to keep this in mind," he told his colleagues.
"When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus, than Democrats have afforded this president in this process.”
Claiming that the impeachment of Donald Trump is more unfair than persecution of Jesus feels like a new low for a Congressman, although they have set the bar extremely low.
Hate to use the word stupid to describe anyone, and it is a scary thought to do so with supposed "leaders of the land" like this. But let's just say that this was one of the stupidest comments that I have heard make news headlines which were not taken directly from Trump in quite a long while.
What a world we live in.
This is the link to the article which I used in writing this particular entry:
GOP congressman says Trump impeachment worse than crucifixion of Jesus by Josh Israel, December 18, 2019:
