Today - December 21st - Is the Day of the Winter Solstice

Winter is here officially.

Well,  at least it will be later on today,  at 11:19 p.m. EST.

It always feels like a good idea to recognize some simple things like that.

Three months of Winter officially begins today.

  1. I'm actually glad. As long as it's going to look and feel like winter anyway – and up here that's been the case for nearly two months already – it might as well officially be winter. Plus at least now we know that the sun will gradually start setting later for the next six months. I don't need to remind you how depressing it is when the sun rises at 4:26pm and sets at 4:43pm. The countdown to spring is officially on!

    1. Yeah, the weather has been a bit erratic here. Well below freezing for a stretch, then today felt like spring. You probably have had far colder, and likely more snow.

  2. Today it's actually quite mild for this time of year: it's 40ΒΊ, and we're expecting a high of 47ΒΊ later this afternoon. But overall it's been cold, and there's been at least some snow on the ground for most of the last month and a half.
