Winter Wonderland of West Milford




Winter storms are nothing new in New Jersey,  or the greater New York metropolitan area more generally.

Yet,  despite having lived in West Milford for most of my youth,  and seeing the significant difference between snow storms in the higher altitudes of the Kittatinny foothills,  it still never fails to surprise me how huge the difference is between areas in the lower altitudes,  versus those in the hills.

In Hillsborough,  we got some snow,  and we had to be careful driving.  But it was just enough to coat,  and you could see the top of the grass. The snow was mostly gone already later the same day,  and there was barely a trace to be seen outside the window.

Then, I visited West Milford two days after the storm,  and was stunned to see the difference.  Trees with a thick layer of snow bending them over roads that were still slick at points.  About a foot of snow,  and a feeling that the town was only now beginning to return to normal.  After all,  school was closed for Monday and Tuesday,  and there was a delayed opening yesterday.

But it made for some beautiful scenery!
