⚽️ PSG Blanks Nantes & Remains Well Ahead in Ligue 1 Standings ⚽️

PSG resumed Ligue 1 play on Wednesday against Nantes. Entering the game, PSG was comfortably ahead in the standings. They were trying not to allow any lapses that might allow other teams to catch them in the standings.

The game was scoreless through the first half. But French star Kylian Mbappé finally broke through in the 52nd minute to give PSG the lead with the first goal of the game.

Later, Neymar scored in the 85th minute on what turned out to be a successful penalty try, giving PSG a nearly insurmountable 2-0 lead with little time left on the clock.

They were able to hold off Nantes the rest of the way to preserve the win.

With this result, PSG remains comfortably ahead in Ligue 1 standings, with 36 points earned thus far in the 15 Ligue 1 games that they have played. They are five points ahead of second place Olympique Marseille, who are red hot, having won five straight games now.

  1. As well as Marseille is playing and despite the fact that Lyon has slowly but surely recovered from an uncharacteristically poor start, it's hard to imagine a scenario wherein PSG don't win another French championship this season. Lille is good, and Monaco are showing some signs of life after getting off to an even more disastrous start than Lyon, but it won't be enough.
By the way, I'm not sure if you heard, but Les Bleus now know two of the three teams they'll be facing in the first round at next year's Euro. Suffice it to say that being the reigning world champions and ranked number 2 in the world (behind Les Diables Rouges) didn't exactly result in being in an "easy" group. Their group is already being called "The Group of Death" because, get this – it will also feature Germany and Portugal. Whoever winds up rounding out the group isn't likely to be of that same caliber, but it's crazy to think that the winner of the last Euro and the last two winners of the World Cup are going to be facing each other so early in the tournament. Which of course means one of those teams is going to bow out without even qualifying for the elimination round. I'm actually more excited about the game against Portugal than the one against Germany. I'd love to see Les Bleus get some payback for that loss at the Stade de France in 2016.

  2. P.S. There seems to be a flurry of games before the annual holiday break. PSG played yet again today, this time in Montpellier. They conceded a goal in the 41st minute and looked as though they might suffer a rare defeat, before scoring three unanswered goals (Neymar in the 74th minute, Mbappé in the 76th and Icardi in the 81st) to clinch the come-from-behind victory.
