🏈 2021-22 NFL Week 5 Thursday Night Football Review: Rams Outlast Seahawks, While Wilson Sprains Finger 🏈

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Los Angeles Rams 26, Seattle 17

Well, the Seahawks suffered a really bad loss. I would not go so far as to say that this loss ended their season or anything, because you never know what will happen, and what teams can get on a hot streak or, conversely, suddenly get cold or have bad luck. However, this felt like a must win for them, given that they could not afford to lose any more ground to either the Rams or the Cardinals in the NFC West.

Indeed, they started off on the right foot, with their defense playing well and shutting the Rams offense down, and their offense finding the end zone on a 3-play, 83 yard drive that ended with a spectacular touchdown catch by DK Metcalf from Russell Wilson. That gave the Seahawks the 7-0 lead, and the home crowd was rocking.

The Rams scored a field goal at the end of the first half, but Seattle still owned a decent 7-3 lead by halftime. But the Rams scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take the 16-7 lead as the two NFC West rivals headed into the final quarter.

Seattle did manage to score a touchdown to make it close in the fourth quarter when Geno Smith, the former Jets quarterback, in for Russell Wilson after Wilson suffered a badly sprained finger, found DK Metcalf for a 23-yard touchdown. Down 16-14, they only needed a field goal to take the lead.

However, after finally pulling again to within striking distance again, the Seahawks were unable to keep the Rams offense out of the end zone. Sony Michel, the former Patriots running back, capped a 6-play, 73-yard drive with a touchdown run form two yards out.

The Seahawks did get a field goal to make it a one possession game again late in the fourth quarter.

And sure enough they got a chance to try and steal the game, but any drama left ended when Geno Smith showed a glimpse of his old days with the New York Jets, throwing a pick deep in Seattle territory. All the Rams needed was a field goal to effectively put it out of reach, and ice the game.

The Rams did a lot right in this game. They won the time of possession battle decisively, holding onto the ball for over 33 minutes, and producing 476 yards, to 354 for Seattle. Finally, the two Seattle turnovers really hurt the Seahawks, especially that last one, although the Rams committed one turnover, as well.

With the win, the Rams recover from their first loss of the season with a big divisional win on the road to improve to 4-1. Meanwhile, the Seahawks fall to 2-3, and appear to be in serious trouble, as they are now two full games behind the Rams, and two a half behind the division leading Cardinals, who will take on the 49ers in another NFC West showdown. The Rams will play the Giants at the Meadowlands next, while the Seahawks will visit Pittsburgh in their next game.

My pick: Inaccurate
