Atlanta 27, NY Jets 20
The Jets outplayed the Falcons in London from about midway throughout the second half, to the end of the game.
Unfortunately, Atlanta had outplayed Gang Green up to that point to such an extent, that the Jets had spotted the Falcons a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter, and still led 20-3 by halftime. So even while the Jets outscored the Falcons 17-7 the rest of the way, it was a classic case of too little, too late.
If you want to win a game like this, even against a team infamous for giving up big leads, you still should not allow them to build a 17-point lead like that. Yes, the Jets outplayed the Falcons, and convincingly at that, in the second half. But being down 17 points is most often too big of a hole for most teams to climb out of. That goes double for an offense that is as generally inept as the Jets offense still remains. They are improving, to be sure. But not that much.
On the day, the Falcons owned the decisive advantage in terms of time of possession, holding onto the ball for almost 36 minutes, while producing 450 yards of offense, which nearly doubled the Jets total. The Falcons earned 28 first downs, to just 17 for Gang Green, much of it in the second half. All of which allowed Atlanta to overcome two turnovers, while the Jets only committed one. It just proved not to be so crucial to their chances, when you have other statistics that overwhelmingly favor you, like the Falcons did today.
And so, it is another disappointment for Gang Green. One week after earning their first (and so far, only) win of the season last weekend, they fall back to their struggling ways this weekend. Their offense is getting better, but it really took them too long to show up in this one, because they really only got going in the second half. And the defense, which usually is the strength for this team, had a forgettable day, to say the least.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Jets fall to 1-4. Both teams will have a bye next week, but the Jets will travel to New England to take on the Pats in their next game, while the Falcons will travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins.
My pick: Inaccurate
We're in the midst of yet another typical Jets season, in which a couple fluke wins and a couple narrow losses are the de facto highlights.
ReplyDeleteSame old Jets. "Just End The Season " Not that the Giants are really any better.
DeleteTrue, but unlike the Jets the Giants have had plenty of post-moon landing, post-Beatles breakup success.
