As if we needed yet one more reason to diminish Columbus Day, here is yet one more reason: he was not the first European to discover the North American continent.
This, of course, was already common knowledge. We have known this for some time now. After all, Vikings were known to have been in Greenland, and there are Viking remains on Newfoundland. Also, it has long been suspected, if not quite proven, that Vikings reached other parts of the North American continent, as well.
However, ring data is now providing scientists with more concrete proof and precision of knowing when exactly the Vikings were here in North America. That is something that could and should change the history books.
