Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the popular former President of Brazil, will also be the future President of Brazil, as well.
Yes Lula won the recent presidential election, albeit narrowly. Yes, Lula won by received 51.9 percent of the vote, to 49.1 for incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.
In the days following the election, however, there was considerable tension. Bolsonaro and his supporters had given every indication that they would not accept or concede an election if they lost. And with the military having strong support for Bolsonaro, there were fears that Brazil's democracy itself was in danger. It was not radically different from the situation that has developed here in the United States, with every election since Trump's political rise now seemingly tainted with uncertainty, claims of massive voter fraud, and the possibility of violence. Yet, Bolsonaro was surprisingly quiet in the days immediately following the election.
When Bolsonaro finally did make a public appearance, he was not as dead set on revolting as many had feared. While he did not concede the election loss, he nevertheless did give indications that there would be preparations for a transition of power.
