Buffalo Pounded By Historic Snowstorm

As I write this right now, on the evening of Friday, November 18th, the Buffalo area is receiving a historic level snowstorm, even by Buffalo standards. The Lake Effect assures that Buffalo and the area around Lake Erie will pretty much always get a lot of snow every winter. However, this particular snowstorm is dumping an unbelievable amount of snow on the city and region even by those standards.

According to CNN, over 5 feet of snow (over 1,5 meters) has fallen on the city. There have already been two people who died as a result of the snowstorm.

Not surprisingly, this storm is doing what big, severe snowstorms always see to do: closing roads and major highways, downing trees and damaging property, and threatening power failures to many homes and neighborhoods. Schools were closed on Friday. And the snowstorm is not yet quite done, even as it moves into the weekend.

Of course, not everyone is quite so bummed out. In fact, the city's NFL team, the Buffalo Bills, are showing some humor, with pictures from both the team's official Twitter page, and individual players, showing just how much snow is piled up where they are. The game between the Bills and the Browns, which was supposed to take place at Orchard Park (the normal home stadium of the Buffalo Bills) has been moved to Detroit, Michigan.

Well, in any case, I know that cities in the Great Lakes often get a lot of snow. That seems particularly true for Chicago, Cleveland, and Buffalo, for some reason. And while I guess they get used to it after a while, I can't quite imagine getting used to being pounded by snow so regularly, or in this case, so severely. I mean, I am a few inches taller than the average male height in the United States right now, and they have already come close to that amount of snow in some parts of the Buffalo area. Just the thought of spending not just one full day, but entire days cooped up somewhere and trying to wait out a snowstorm that is this big, and then having to go out there and shovel all of that, and the back aches and head aches, hands hurting from handling the shovel for so long, having to really throw that snow over the walls or canals that have formed on either side, and then digging the car out, and hoping that the roads are relatively clear. Man, we get that usually at least once or twice each winter here in Jersey, those big snowstorms. But it seems like it's almost a way of life up in Buffalo. Yet even by their standards, this is an unusually severe snowstorm. I wish everyone up in that region the best of luck, and hope that they keep their spirits up. That sounds really rough.
