CFL: The 109th Grey Cup Toronto Stuns Blue Bombers, Denies Winnipeg a Dynasty

Grey Cup/Coupe Grey

Toronto Argonauts 24,  Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were very close to being a dynasty. Having won the previous two Grey Cups, and then had dominated the season to this point. They were back in the Grey Cup for a third straight appearance. A win would cement their status as a dynasty.

The Toronto Argonauts, however, had other ideas. They had not been nearly as dominant in the East as Winnipeg has been, but they had managed to get to the Grey Cup again for the first time in years, after having been narrowly denied that privilege last season. And they came out ready to make their case for the title, taking the early lead.

It proved to be a back and forth battle. The momentum swung back and forth, although it appeared that the Blue Bombers had the game almost in hand after scoring early in the fourth quarter, taking a seemingly commanding 23-14 lead. But the Argonauts did just enough to keep their hopes alive, kicking a field goal and then getting another opportunity late in the game.

Winnipeg also did not do themselves any favors, uncharacteristically committing numerous turnovers, including two late interceptions. The last of these gave the ball back to Toronto, and they were able to kneel down and run out the clock, with the Blue Bombers unable to do anything about it.

This was only the second meeting between the two teams this season. Winnipeg had narrowly defeated the Argonauts, 23-22, back in July, on the road in Toronto. Now, the Argonauts returned the favor with a 24-23 win in their favor, which meant that the two teams essentially exchanged one-point wins. Obviously, however, this one was far and away the most import game of the two, and the one that people will remember, because it crowns the Toronto Argonauts as the new Grey Cup Champions for 2022.

My pick: Inaccurate
