Here is another recent article on Kurt Vonnegut, for the occasion of his 100th birthday yesterday. I know that there were already two blog entries on Vonnegut yesterday, and that a third might seem excessive. However, I only saw this today, and besides, it's Kurt Vonnegut. The world could still use more Vonnegut, I think, and now perhaps even more than ever before.
It would be best simply to click on the link below, which is from NPR, specifically from Tom Vitale, and it was heard on All Things Considered. Indeed, it seems to me that Vonnegut's antiwar novels and writings are as relevant now as they ever were before.
There is also a quote that I think feels even more relevant than when Vonnegut first uttered it, as well. So I thought it would be worth sharing here. On the topic of the United States, his country, Vonnegut expressed his disappointment that it did not go farther and do more than it wound up doing in order to be a huge success. Here is the quote:
"I'm sorry that America isn't a greater success than it is," he told me in 1991. "Because we're so wealthy and we really could have done almost anything. And we've done so very little in comparison to what we might have done in creating an ideal society."
Below is the link to the article that got me on this topic:
Kurt Vonnegut would have turned 100 today — his war novels are relevant as ever by Tom Vitale, as heard on All Things Considered of NPR, November 11, 2022:
