2025 NFL Week 5 Thursday Night Football Review: San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams

Thursday Night Football: San Francisco 49ers (3-1) at Los Angeles Rams (3-1)

Wow! What a game this one should be.

Two teams that are division rivals, both with legitimate championship hopes this year, and both with identical 3-1 records, tied for first place in the NFC West.

All of that makes this an intriguing match-up. Really, this game will be for first place in the NFC West, and getting an early start to the season.

The 49ers were stunned by the Jaguars last week. While I have to admit that I was a bit shocked by that result, it makes me wonder if they might not have been overlooking a relatively weak opponent.

Don't expect them to look past the Rams this weekend, however.

These two teams often play some close games. The Rams won both meetings last season, sweeping the 49ers. In fact, Los Angeles has won the past three meetings, although the first of those three was a relatively meaningless one for San Fran, who were then headed to the playoffs as one of the top seeds, and ultimately going to the Super Bowl.

However, the Niners really owned the rivalry prior to those last three games. They seemed to have mastered the Rams prior to that point. And that makes me wonder if they might not reassert that old dominance, since they look really good so fa this season.

That said, the Rams are coming off a bit win over the previously undefeated Colts. And the Rams also look fantastic to this point.

Some health concerns for the Niners in particular, with running back Christian McCaffery and quarterback Brock Purdy both questionable.

It should be a really interesting game, and this one feels like it will go down to the wire, to be decided in the fourth quarter.

Still, the 49ers are my pick to take this one.

My pick: San Francisco
