NY Giants 34, Philadelphia Eagles 17
Well, I was wrong. But happy to be wrong.
The Giants snapped an eight game skid against NFC East opponents by defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles last night, and surprisingly convincingly at that.
It was a back and forth kind of a struggle, this game was. The Eagles went up early with a field goal, followed by two touchdowns by the G-Men which put them up, 13-3. But Philly responded with a run, scoring two touchdowns of their own to take a 17-13 lead midway through the second quarter.
After that, the game was taken over by Big Blue.
The G-Men scored a touchdown late in the second quarter to take a 20-17 lead to the lockers for the half.
In the second half, the Giants defense pitched a shutout. Philly turned the ball over twice. And the Giants scored when they needed to, ultimately notching two more touchdowns for a convincing 34-17 win against an impressive opponent.
Young quarterback Jaxson Dart continues to impress, showing leadership beyond his years and completing 17 of 25 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown. Running back Cameron Skattebo added an additional 98 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Indeed, the G-Men led a balanced attack in producing 366 total yards and 25 first downs, while converting an impressive 11 of 16 third downs.
It feels like the kind of win which might help change the narrative in the New York area surrounding the Giants, who have become a steadily losing team in recent years.
The struggles for Big Blue have been particularly noticeable with their struggles against fellow NFC East opponents in recent seasons. This particular rivalry pretty much underscored that. The Eagles have been to the Super Bowl three times in recent seasons, winning twice, dating back to 2017. Meanwhile, the Giants have been one of the losingest teams in the league during that same time period. Naturally, then, the rivalry between them has been predictably one-sided in favor of the Eagles.
So picking up a win like this, especially with the Eagles having just suffered their first loss (against the Broncos) last weekend really meant something. Suddenly, the Giants season is not necessarily lost. Also, suddenly the Eagles running away with this division is not a foregone conclusion.
The two franchises are set to meet again later this month in Philadelphia. Just a few weeks from now, in fact.
For now, however, it felt good to see the Giants win a meaningful game against Philly, their traditional tormentors.
My pick: Inaccurate
