The Saskatchewan Rough Riders have been the dominant team throughout this season. Not just in the West, mind you, but overall. To this point, they have played 15 games, earning 11 wins to just 4 losses, good for 22 points. Easily the best of any team in the CFL.
For the most part, it felt like the best teams were all out West this season, although that changed recently. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats in particular overcame a poor start and have been doing a whole lot of winning in recent weeks and even months. With 10 wins to 6 losses for 20 points, they are second overall in the CFL in terms of standings, and sit fairly comfortably atop the East Division over second place Montreal, with 8 wins and 7 losses for 16 points. Those two teams are the only ones from the East which have qualified for the postseason, although both Toronto and Ottawa have also already been eliminated. The Argos currently have 5 wins to 11 losses for a total of 10 points so far, while the Renegades have 4 wins to 11 losses for 8 points.
Okay, so let's look at the rest of the West Division. Again, that has been far and away the best consistently throughout this CFL season. After Saskatchewan, the British Columbia Lions are currently in second place with 9 wins and 7 losses for 18 points overall. They are also the only other team out West right now which has already clinched a playoff spot. The Calgary Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers are next, tied for third in the West Division, sporting the same exact record and having the same amount of points accumulated. Both have 8 wins and 7 losses, good for 16 points overall.
Finally, the Edmonton Elks, a franchise which has been struggling (and losing) for numerous seasons now also will likely finish in last place this season. To be sure, there is still a sliver of a chance for them, but they are on very thin ice and would require a lot of help from other teams, as they have won 6 games and accumulated 9 losses overall, good for 12 total points.
The playoff pictures will become a little bit more focused this coming weekend with the new slate of games. The first will be played on Friday, October 10th, when the Toronto Argonauts (the defending champions) will visit Saskatchewan. Calgary will visit Hamilton in the first Saturday game, and then the Blue Bombers will visit Edmonton in the later game. Finally, Ottawa will visit Montreal on Monday afternoon, which will be the traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Canada. Remember, Thanksgiving in Canada falls on the second Monday of October.
Let's see what happens.
