Battle of the Meadowlands: N.Y. Giants at N.Y. Jets

New York Jets (1-7)

N.Y. Giants (2-7) at N.Y. Jets (1-7)

These two teams have played 17 games combined thus far this season, and have a total of three wins between them. The Giants have lost to some mediocre teams, as have the Jets. Hell, the Jets just lost to what most people had assumed to be the worst team in the league this season. The Giants are on yet another major losing streak. So, NFL football is dead by the midway point of the season for a third straight year here in the greater New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

This is pretty close to being one of those games where fans (probably of both teams) can show up with bags over their heads. Neither team has show much positive this season, and it has been a while for both teams.

The Giants are officially the road team, but they are currently on a five game losing streak, having just lost their big showdown against Dallas. Their defense gives up far too many big plays, and their young quarterback keeps coughing up the ball way too much, giving golden opportunities for opposing defense.

Meanwhile, the Jets are officially the home team, but they too have to be feeling quite lousy. They are coming off a demoralizing loss against the previously winless, and frankly pathetic, Miami Dolphins. They are 1-7 right now, and just looking abysmal, with one of the worst records in the league, and tied with Miami (who actually presently own the tiebreaker between the two teams) for last place in the AFC East.

So, things are actually looking quite bad for both teams as they enter this showdown between local teams.

Who will win?

Well, it probably is a matter of who will avoid making the mistakes that have killed both teams to this point in the season. Both teams are highly susceptible to those killer mistakes, and neither team has really managed to overwhelm opponents with their strengths, with maybe the exception of that one game when the Giants dominated a very weak Washington team. Otherwise, it has been consistently bad football from both teams, which means neither is likely to overwhelm the other with their awesome talent and powers.

In the end, with home field advantage likely being negligible, I suspect that this game will be won by the better team. And by default, I think the better - or possibly the least crummy of these two teams would be a more apt description - is presently the Giants. And so they are the team that would be my pick for this particular game.

My pick: N.Y. GIANTS
