Seahawks Top Previously Unbeaten 49ers in Wild Monday Night Football Classic

Seattle 27, San Francisco 24 (OT)

This was a huge match-up between the two top teams in the NFC West. Both pay tough, physical defense, and both also have potentially explosive, dangerous offenses. Seattle entered at 7-2, which is a solid record. Yet they faced the very real prospect of falling too far behind 8-0 San Francisco to realistically entertain any hopes to catch them in the NFC West if they lost.

Neither team looked perfect, and there were unforced errors and even cringe-worthy moments produced by both sides.

Yet, there was almost a playoff intensity to the game, and it remained close through to the end, when the Seahawks finally managed to kick a field goal with just seconds left in overtime, thus earning the tough road win.

The 49ers looked unbeatable early in jumping out to a 10-0 lead. At that point, the crowd was intense, and the Seahawks looked almost overwhelmed. Slowly but surely, however, they clawed their way back into it, and eventually took a 21-10 lead, looking capable of running away with the thing.

But this was a classic for a reason, as the 49ers also fought their way back, capitalizing on one of numerous turnovers by the Seahawks, when Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson fumbled the ball deep in Seattle territory. DeForest Buckner recovered, and lumbered into the end zone for a defensive touchdown that got the Niners right back into the game.

On the day, Wilson completed 24 of 34 for 232 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Chris Carson added 89 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.

Jimmy Garropolo, in a losing cause for the 49ers, completed 24 of 46 passes for 248 yards, also with one touchdown and one INT. He looked a little nervous towards the end, when the pressure was on to keep the 49ers in the game, although he lucked out with Seattle defenders missing what were almost interceptions to ice the game. Deebo Samuel was his favorite target, catching eight passes and picking up 112 yards.

The two teams were fairly even in almost every statistic, more or less drawing even in time of possession, yards and first downs gained, although the Seahawks had one more turnover.

This was Seattle's fifth straight road win, which ties a franchise record. It also improves their record to 8-2, just half a game behind the 49ers. Had they lost, it would almost have been inconceivable for the 49ers not to emerge as NFC West champs had they won. Instead, they are handed their first loss and sink to 8-1 on the year, although they remain atop the NFC West standings.

My prediction: Inaccurate
