Just a few days ago, a Trump supporter at my job (an old man) was telling me that the whole impeachment process was a scam, an attempt by the Democrats to get rid of a democratically elected president.
I did not engage him, because...well, why bother? He is old and seems set in his ways. Also, I have found that Trump supporters are virtually impossible to reason with, or even have a rational discussion with, frankly.
Had I opted to engage him, however, I might have pointed out a few things. First, the people trying to hold Trump accountable, and ultimately championing impeachment, were themselves democratically elected. Secondly, impeachment is an official act that was included in the Constitution by the Founding Fathers, so it is not an unthinkable act. When a president breaks the law, there should be ramifications. Serious ramifications. And the facts in this case are not in dispute. Trump's defense seems not to be that he did not break the law, as much as it is: well, we did it, and who cares? What are you going to do about it?
And with supporters like that stubborn old man, and with a weak, Republican-controlled Senate that caters to Trump's every whim, they keep getting away with it.
Here is the latest on what is proving to be a farce impeachment proceeding that is, frankly, insulting to our collective intelligence, much like the 2016 election, and virtually every aspect of this ridiculous excuse for a Trump presidency, has been an insult to our intelligence:
