Well, this really was a March Madness day. Earlier today, I watched the first stunning upset, when 4th Virginia was defeated by 13th seed Furman.
But that was nothing compared with what happened just a little bit later. Princeton University stunned Number 2 Arizona today. Entering the game, Princeton was the 15th seed, and wins by 15th seeds over 2nd seeds tend to be very rare.
To be sure, it was hardly a dominant win. Princeton managed mostly to escape with a 59-55 win over Arizona.
Still, a win is a win. This was the biggest win for Princeton Men's Basketball since they pulled off a stunning upset over UCLA in 1996. Princeton had been the 13th seed entering that game. In the history of March Madness, a 15th seed defeating a number 2 seed has happened 11 times, which is actually a surprisingly high number. This also marks three straight years that this has happened.
What a win for the Princeton Tigers!
