Donald Trump Will Need to Pay $5 Million After Sexual Abuse Civil Case in New York City

In the Trump rape case in New York City, a jury found the former president liable for defamation and sexual abuse.

However, this does not mean that Trump is either legally convicted of rape, nor will he spend any time in jail for this, since it was a civil case. Still, he will have to pay Ms. Carroll $5 million.

The problem with this particular case and verdict is that it likely was not going to lead anywhere. Yes, he will need to pay $5 million, and he surely will not be happy about that. And this also will get many Trump haters to celebrate that he was found guilty.

Yet, it also will, if anything, cement the support of those who love him. From their perspective, this is just yet another case where someone was trying to "get him" once and for all, and effectively failed. It makes him look indeed like he is being persecuted, in their viewpoint. And Trump will walk away, and you know that he will immediately say - and with some validity - that they had not actually convicted him of rape, which allegedly took place some 30 years ago, and that they were just finding anything to try and pin him. It also feels like it is stealing some thunder from the more immediate and very serious charges of election interference in Georgia, and his apparently criminal handling of very sensitive, classified documents. Both of those felt like they were urgent and necessary to prosecute him for, in the interest of national security and stability of our democracy. Instead, they might appear to be just yet more attempts to try and knock Trump out of our political picture, especially to those brainwashed supporters. Also, he has already proclaimed his innocence, and thus, his intention to appeal. He claimed that this is "the greatest witch hunt of all time," which seems to me pure and utter bull. Still, it seems very likely that his supporters will hang on his every word, and that they will buy his line of argument hook, line, and sinker.

Some things never change.
