The political climate in the United States today has turned into a joke, albeit a very unfunny one. It might indeed be funny, if the stakes were not so damn serious.
Today, we are seeing the rise of a mixture of idiocy and a form of fascism that, at least for the time being, is not directly advocating hard core totalitarianism, but is at least paying lip service to our American democracy. That they do, even as they do everything possible to undermine the strength of that democracy. Just look at how systematically they attack the legitimacy of our elections, something which used to be simply accepted without question, regardless of who won and who lost.
Those days are gone, apparently. It feels like every single national election - particularly presidential elections - from here on out will be hotly contested, and I am not talking about merely the actual election itself. The relative peace and stability of elections that we took for granted just a generation ago now seems like quaint memories of an increasingly distant past.
One of the post children for this depressing new wave of totalitarianism is Marjorie Taylor Greene. Last year, she spoke about something that she apparently fully believes in: Christian nationalism. I would urge everyone to read her words and understand her vision, because this is not normal, and this certainly is not in keeping with what still remains as our democratic traditions.
