Remembering Lost Cultures of the Americas in Pre-Columbian Times

This was an interesting link, with illustrations, that focuses on the Native American cultures which existed as they were before Columbus came, and a wave of Europeans shortly thereafter. This obviously altered the course of history radically. It had a huge and, let's face it, very detrimental impact on the Native American people and cultures.

For a very long time - not just decades but centuries - Native Americans and their culture and wisdom were not only not taken seriously, but were scorned and derided. There were efforts at genocide, to wipe that culture off the face of the map. 

Nowadays, that is beginning to change. We are beginning to understand, once and for all, that these cultures not only had value, but possessed wisdom, too. A wisdom that we can benefit from. To my knowledge, it was Henry David Thoreau who began to reverse the flow of the tides of anti-Native sentiment that had previously dominated, and without question or dissent. Even then, it took a long time for this thinking to truly grab hold. But it seemed to me like something happened right before the time when the 500th anniversary of Columbus "discovering" America was to be celebrated. People began to question just why we should be celebrating something that was, frankly, a tragic chapter in history. 

Then, slowly but surely, and with obvious major backslides, we started to view Native American culture differently. There are still people who vehemently dissent from such viewpoints. However, the momentum has taken hold. Most of us feel that Native Americans not only had value, but wisdom which we can benefit from. They seemed to enjoy a batter and more balanced way of life, one not so focused on greed, one that seemed to not do nearly so much damage to our Mother Earth as our own approach clearly seems to be doing.

In that spirit, it seemed that this link would be worth sharing. This is a link that examines those Pre-Columbian cultures that existed in the lands now known as the Americas before Columbus arrived. It is a history which deserves to be remembered:
