Okay, so once again, I should probably give updates on the CFL, since it just got underway. I actually watched a decent amount of last night's game, and thought it would be worth discussing here.
So here goes:
Montreal 27 Winnipeg 12
The Blue Bombers had the advantage over the Alouettes of having had a ton of experience with deep playoff runs in their fourth consecutive Gray Cup Final appearance when the two teams met last November in the big game. But it did not help them in the end, as the Alouettes pulled off an upset to become champions.
Last night, the Blue Bombers had home field advantage in their opening game against the Alouettes. But it did not help them to win, or even to remain competitive for most of the game.
Indeed, the Alouettes looked every bit the part of defending Gray Cup champions last night. They relied on the strength of their defense, which really carried the team to the championship last year. That defense smothered Winnipeg's offense throughout most of the night.
The Alouettes de Montréal basically dominated the Blue Bombers in the end, winning more convincingly even than the 27-12 final score would suggest. Winnipeg's offense did not manage to score a touchdown until late in the final quarter, with Montréal already boasting a 27-5 lead. So the game really did not feel that close.
To their credit, Montréal's own offense was decent and opportunistic, more than dominating or overwhelming. They even relied on a trick play in the fourth quarter to earn their final touchdown, which effectively put the game out of reach for the hometown Blue Bombers. Quarterback Cody Fajardo had a solid day, completing 20 of 28 passes for 254 yards and a couple of touchdowns, as well as one INT.
A very solid start for the defending champions, while a bit more of a worrying beginning to the season for Winnipeg. In fairness, you almost have to expect the Blue Bombers to recover and rank among the relative elites in the league this season.
