France met Austria in Düsseldorf, Germany, yesterday in the opening game for both teams in the Euro 2024.
Les Bleus hardly dominated, but they were ultimately successful. They defeated a very tough and determined Austrian side, who showed a lot of hunger and kept the pressure on France all night.
It did not hurt that luck apparently was on the side of France on this night. Austria's Maximilian Wöber scored an Own Goal while trying to clear a pass off the foot of Kylian Mbappé in the 38th minute. That, plus a stingy French defense that limited Austria to just six shots, and just three on target, was enough for the French side to escape a tough challenge with a win. French goalkeeper Mike Maignan was impressive in saving the few opportunities which Austria were given, and ultimately maintained a clean sheet.
There was one bit of scary news for France, however. Kylian Mbappé suffered an injury in the second half. He was knocked to the ground and ultimately suffered a broken nose. As of right now, he is listed as doubtful for France's next game against Netherlands, which would be a significant loss for Les Bleus which might severely impair their chances at a win.
We shall see what happens.
