“We now live in a nation where doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the press destroys information, religion destroys morals, and our banks destroy the economy.”
― Chris Hedges
Today, it seemed worth sharing this brief video of one of the great journalists, and today political activists, Chris Hedges. In this video clip, he talks about the general decline of the media in the world, and how the absence of reliable and quality media is contributing to making matters worse.
This decline did not happen by accident. In fact, it is both a product of, and contributing to, the dumbing down of the world in general, and the United States in particular. Any hopes of a quick recovery are probably pointless, barring some major surprise or unforeseen circumstances. My guess is that things would really have to be shaken up in this country, and in this world, for people to snap out of their belief in a dream world and wake up to reality. Another way of putting it is that, unfortunately, things will have to get worse - possibly far worse - before they ever get better.
Hedges makes clear that nowadays, the major media serve more as an obstacle, a vry real hindrance, to a better world than as a source of illumination to help enlighten people and create that better world. Disinformation is everywhere, and the media propagates it. One such non-story which I agree with is the whole Russia scandal which supposedly was instrumental in the political rise. That was a story which the mainstream media just ran with and claimed as the gospel truth, even though it always seemed too vague and, frankly, convenient and self-serving to the Hillary Clinton campaign to be true. Hedges condemns their handling of this "news" story, and frankly, so do I.
That is just one of a number of examples which can be used, and which hedges get into with more specifics elsewhere, in other videos. This is brief video clip, but it felt worth sharing here.
Please take a look.
Enjoy.
