A Brief Visit to Binghamton, New York

When I was growing up, I spent quite a bit of time in the Catskills. Specifically, in Liberty, which is in Sullivan County.

There were signs for the city of Binghamton, which was something like 90 miles away. But we never had any reason to go, so I never saw it.

However, that changed in 1990. My curiosity won out, and I told my grandmother, who decided that we could take a trip there. It was not spectacular or anything, yet I enjoyed the visit. Binghamton seemed like a cool little city.

After that, I basically never went again for many years. Decades even.

It feels a little strange to me, because I passed by it often enough. There were trips to Syracuse, to Buffalo and Niagara Falls and Toronto, during which I passed right by it. It was closer than the midway point for Buffalo and Canada. Yet, it never really became a point where I stopped to take a rest, as Lake George often did during trips up north to Quebec province.

More recently, I must have passed it going in both directions literally dozens of times since my parents moved to western New York. Yet still, I rarely ever went to the actual city, with one small exception some years ago.

But as I was driving back to New Jersey earlier today, it seemed like I had a decent opportunity. I was making good time, the weather was the best it had been all week, and I was here. Why not, right?

There was one statue there that I had long wanted to see. It was of native Rod Serling, of The Twilight Zone fame. For years, I had intended to stop by, if only just to catch a glimpse of the statue. Take a few pictures.

Then while doing some research just days ago, I discovered that there was a new statue of Harriet Tubman.

So I decided to pay Binghamton another visit, albeit admittedly a brief one.

Below are the pictures from the visit:
