2025 Grey Cup: Saskatchewan Roughriders 25, Montréal Alouettes 17
Last night, the 112th Grey Cup was played in frigid Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Now admittedly, since I worked both of my jobs this weekend, I missed the entirety of the first half between the Montréal Alouettes and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. When I woke up, however, the halftime show had just ended (so I missed it and thus really cannot comment on it), and the second half was just about to begin.
They kept discussing the game, and suggesting that Montréal would really have to adjust their game, especially on defense, in order to slow down Saskatchewan's red-hot offense.
The Roughriders had essentially taken over the game with a dominant second quarter. And as I watched, it was clear that this trend continued through almost all of the third quarter. Indeed, Saskatchewan went on a 24-0 run from the second quarter through the third quarter which effectively allowed them to win their first Grey Cup championship since 2013.
Montréal's normally stingy defense was clearly having difficulty trying to contain Saskatchewan's offense, which at times looked like it was putting on a clinic. It did not help that the offensive approach for the Alouettes appeared impatient, going for long bomb and quick strikes to try and force things in order to get back into the game quickly. It felt like an unwise strategy, and the Roughriders clearly were expecting it.
Frankly, it smacked almost of borderline panic. It also caused a turnover, from which the Roughriders added an additional field goal.
Montréal had won the title only two years ago, mostly behind the strength of a very stingy defense. However, that experience did not seem to be overly helpful on this day. Their offense just did not look like they were able to get in sync until very late in the third quarter, literally in the final minutes, when they were already behind 25-7. By that point, it may already have been too late. The Alouettes did score a touchdown, but they still had a lot of work to do, and on both sides of the ball, in order to really give themselves a chance at a comeback win.
Ultimately, it just was not enough. The better team on this day clearly were the Saskatchewan Roughriders. They had been the best team in the entire CFL right from the beginning of the season. They finished this game proving that it was no fluke, leaving no doubt that they deserved this Grey Cup championship.
Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and their fans on a well-deserved
My pick: Accurate
