November 28th: This Day in History

 




Once again, it should be reiterated, that this does not pretend to be a very extensive history of what happened on this day (nor is it the most original - the links can be found down below). On this day in 1520, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan passed through the straight (which now bears his name) and crossed into the Pacific Ocean. In 1821 on this day, Panama declared independence from Spain. The Confederate congress officially admitted Missouri to the Confederate Army on this day in 1861. On this day in 1904, Germany defeated the Hottentot in Warmbad, South West-Africa (present day Namibia). In 1916 on this day, the first (German) air attack on London took place. On this day in 1918, Emperor Wilhelm of Prussia & Germany abdicated the throne following Germany's defeat in World War I. The Grand Ole Opry began broadcasting on this day in 1925. On this day in 1939 during the early phase of World War II, the Soviet government revoked the Russian-Finnish non-attack treaty. In 1943 on this day, Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Josef Stalin met in Tehran for their first meeting during World War II. Enrico Fermi, architect of the nuclear age, died on this day in 1954. On this day in 1958, Chad, the Congo & Mauritania became autonomous members of the French Community. In 1964, the U.S. spacecraft Mariner 4 was launched and would eventually become the first successful mission to Mars. Margaret Thatcher resigned as British Prime Minister of Great Britain; and John Major took over on this day in 1990. In 1994 on this day, Norway voted against joining the European Union. On this day in 2010, WikiLeaks released to the public more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables. About 100,000 were marked "secret" or "confidential."

 On this day in 1520, Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan passed through the straight (which now bears his name) and crossed into the Pacific Ocean. 1520 - Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan reached the Pacific Ocean after passing through the South American strait. The strait was named after him. He was the first European to sail the Pacific from the east.

  1757 - English poet, painter and engraver William Blake was born. Two of his best known works are "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience."   1919 - American-born Lady Astor was elected the first female member of the British Parliament.   1922 - Capt. Cyril Turner of the Royal Air Force gave the first public exhibition of skywriting. He spelled out, "Hello USA. Call Vanderbilt 7200" over New York's Times Square.   1925 - The Grand Ole Opry made its radio debut on station WSM.   1934 - The U.S. bank robber George "Baby Face" Nelson was killed by FBI agents near Barrington, IL.   1942 - 491 people died in a fire that destroyed the Coconut Grove in Boston.   1943 - U.S. President Franklin D.
