A Link on Learning Some Essential Knots

Just lately, I seem to have returned a bit to an old interest, or perhaps a fantasy, of mine. This is one that is not unique to me, but in fact, seems to be quite common, perhaps particularly among men. It is one of basically dropping everything and going out into the woods, and trying to live under my own power.

Admittedly, this was more of an active fantasy when younger. As you grow older, and the aches and pains, not to mention the responsibilities and people, in your life make this feel ever more distant and less and less possible.

Still, when I hear accounts of people either choosing to live under their own power, or perhaps forced into such a condition unwittingly. From Thoreau to McCandless, to a recent movie about Yossi Ginsburg and his weeks surviving in the Amazon alone, it still holds the power to truly fascinate me. The inevitable questions come back. Would I have survived that long? What would I do under those circumstances? Would I have been more prepared, or at least as prepared? Or woefully unprepared, and destined to pay a very high price in short order?

Those questions were never answered, but the interest - both a mixture of romantic notions as well as morbid fascination - remains.

In that spirit, it seemed fitting to post this article, which talks about how to tie various knots, which is something that admittedly, I never learned to do particularly well. As the author suggests, knowing how to tie a knot might prove to be far more important someday than you can imagine. You never know how or when something might arise, and such skills will prove not just valuable, but possibly life-saving.
