Okay, so I have not really been keeping up with sports as of late, at least not as much as I normally have. Not sure why, so I cannot give any specific reason, or anything. Just has not been on my mind as much lately, for some reason.
However, it is a busy time of the year. Both the NHL and NBA playoffs are underway, and in full action. Also, there was the NFL draft, which went on through last weekend. Sorry, but even though I would describe myself as generally a fan of the NFL, watching the draft is not really my idea of fun. Frankly, it could put me to sleep. Again, I like sports as a welcome distraction from the world, but you have to be careful, because it could become far too much of a distraction. Some people seem to use all of their capabilities to follow sports. To me, once you are following all of the individual draft prospects and players on each NFL team for your Fantasy Football picks and such, it is getting to be a bit too much. So perhaps I also purposely maintained some distance to keep my own potential obsession in check. By now, however, it is like second nature. Indeed, I truly cannot sit and watch the NFL Draft like some “real fans’ can. And you know what? I’m okay with that.
Also, I allowed my following PSG to lapse quite a bit.
Today, I will try and get back to that a little bit. This will be a sports-themed blog entry, for the first time in a long time.
So, here goes:
NBA Playoffs
We are already in the second round of the NBA playoffs, which is incredible.
The Celtics and defending champion Bucks are tied at 1-1, with Game 3 to be played later today in Milwaukee. The late game will see the Golden State Warriors host the Memphis Grizzlies to see who cane take a 2-1 lead in that series.
Tomorrow, the Suns will meet the Mavericks in Dallas in Game 4, and will try to take a stranglehold on the series. If Phoenix wins, they will own a 3-1 series lead. In the other game, the Heat will also try for a 3-1 series lead when they visit the 76ers in Philadelphia.
NHL Playoffs
As I write this, The Capitals and Panthers are locked in a 1-1 tie in a series that is also tied at 1-1. Later today, the Avalanche will try to take a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Predators. The Penguins will host the Rangers, with those two teams tied at 1-1. Finally, the Flames will visit the Stars to break their 1-1 series tie.
Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs hung on to defeat the defending champion Lightning in Tampa Bay, 5-2. That gave them a 2-1 series lead. Meanwhile in Boston, the Bruins beat the Hurricanes, 4-2, to close the series gap to 2-1. Out West, the Wild crushed the Blues in St. Louis, 5-1, for a 2-1 series lead. And the Oilers crushed the Kings in Los Angeles, 8-2, to also go up in the series, 2-1.
PSG
PSG had a 3-3 tie last weekend against Strasbourg. They will play Troyes tomorrow, although PSG have already clinched the Ligue 1 title.
The NFL Draft
The Jets were given an “A” in one analysis, and many had glowing reports for the picks the Jets made, both individually and as a whole. The same review gave the Giants the grade of an A-. As a fan of the G-Men, I was particularly happy that they finally, finally really addressed the offensive line, which feels like it has been this team’s Achille’s heel for about a decade or so, more or less since the last Super Bowl title.
So both teams seemed to do well. At least that is the consensus. Of course, you never know how well it will all work out. But at least on the surface, it sure seems like both New York teams picked up some serious talent and filled some big needs.
Below are some links that show the players taken by both of the New York teams, as well as grades for each team in the league in the recent draft.
