These latest headlines from the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan feel like a reminder of that old saying, the one about how the more things change, the more they stay the same.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban placed an immediate ban on all women from attending higher education schools. This comes after all sorts of resistance and protests from women and girls inside of that country dating back to last year, when the Taliban took over Afghanistan again after a 20-year war.
So once again, basic human rights are being ignored in Afghanistan, a country that used to be relatively modern, but which has fallen under hard times now for decades. It is hard to imagine such a country, with such a state of affairs. I do hope that things improve there at some point, but it hardly feels promising. Hopefully, the women of the country continue to show bravery and resistance to the Taliban, which seems intent on championing extremist versions of Islam and enforcing them by law.
