Yes, today is the winter solstice. This day also begins the Festival of Yule, marking the Return of the Sun. Traditionally recognized by Germanic people, it lasts from this day until January 1st.
Technically, winter will officially begin here at 1647 EST this afternoon. But it all begins on this day.
This will be the shortest day of the entire calendar year, at least for the Northern Hemisphere. It also means that tonight will be the longest night of the year.
Guess that we can say that it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
